Traditional playing colours of South African provinces

Years denote Currie Cup participation.

Boland (/Winelands; 1939-present): black jerseys with gold collars, black shorts 
Border (/Frontier; 1891-present): brown jerseys, white shorts
Eastern Free State (1968-95, merged with Northern Free State): navy & white quartered jerseys, navy shorts
Eastern Province (/Mighty Elephants; 1889-present): red & black hooped jerseys, black shorts
Eastern Transvaal (/Falcons or Valke; 1948-present, split from Transvaal): red jerseys, white shorts
Far North (1986-95, merged with Northern Transvaal): blue jerseys with red collars, white shorts
Griqualand West (/Griquas; 1889-present): turquoise jerseys with white bands, black shorts
Lowveld (1985-95, merged with South Eastern Transvaal): gold & green
Natal (1890-present): black jerseys with white hoop, white shorts
North Eastern Districts (/North Eastern Cape; 1910-67 as Districts, 1968-95 as Cape, split between Border and Eastern Province): gold jerseys with black collars, black shorts OR blue jerseys with navy hoop & red collars
North Western Cape (1967-95, merged with Griqualand West): blue jerseys with orange hoop & collars, white shorts
Northern Free State (/Griffons; 1968-present): purple jerseys, white shorts, purple socks with gold tops
Northern Natal (1973-95, merged with Natal): green jerseys with gold hoop, white shorts
Northern Transvaal (/Blue Bulls; 1938-present): sky jerseys, navy shorts
Orange Free State (/Orange River Colony/Free State Cheetahs; 1895-present: white jerseys with orange collars, black shorts, red socks
Rhodesia (/Zimbabwe-Rhodesia; 1898-1980): green & white hooped jerseys, white shorts
South Eastern Transvaal (/Pumas; 1969-present): grey jerseys; black shorts; red socks
